Humpback Whale Research
Every year over 5,000 humpback whales migrate down to Hawaii from their feeding grounds in Alaska. They come to the warm, shallow waters off Maui to give birth to their calves and find new mates. These massive mammals start arriving in November and by February the ocean is teaming with them. One of our goals for this trip is to give you a first hand introduction to Humpback whale research. Whale Trust is a non-profit organization that shares in our mission of bringing education and research together. Working with Whale Trust researchers you will learn how to photo ID humpback flukes in an effort to discover which whales have returned this year. Photo identification is an indispensable tool used by researchers to determine whale migration and behavior. By matching your photos with Whale Trust's fluke archives, we can help them to determine which whales are back this season, and perhaps which ones have a new addition to the family.
